I am a heavy consumer of music through streaming services like spotify, last.fm and others. I believe it is the future of music, a future that is advancing like a tsunami and which some are trying to stop by whatever means necessary.
Music is at its peak (music≠record labels), but consumption habits are changing, at least as far as I am concerned. I no longer want to have music stored on CDs because it is an inconvenient format; if I want to listen to a specific track, I have to find the CD where it is and put it in the computer.
Something similar happens to me with MP3s; although I have a large music library, I usually work on several computers and sometimes listen to music on my phone. Do I have to have a replica of my music library on every device I use? And what if I want to show a specific track to a friend on their computer?
That’s why every day I consume more music from streaming services, to which I am also a subscriber.
The problem these services pose for me is that there are certain bands that have decided not to be there, who do not want people to listen to their music on these services and prefer that they pay up and buy a CD or an MP3. My personal experience regarding this is that I have gradually stopped listening to those bands, or the desire to listen to them has to be very powerful for me to leave my streaming program and open the MP3s of their songs. This is why I believe that, little by little, certain big bands that are not on streaming will become invisible to the new generations of music consumers who will preferably consume it via streaming.
Bands like Pink Floyd, Oasis, Metallica, The Beatles, etc… will be completely invisible and will lose the brand value, the mass-market appeal, they once had.
This reflection comes in light of the recently announced addition of The Beatles to the iTunes catalog, and I am convinced they have done it because they perceived that record sales have plummeted and they were missing the wave, but a wave even bigger than digital sales is coming: the streaming wave
